Sunday June 29, 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPORTS | NEXT STORY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cougars advance to semifinals BY DEMORRIS LEE, Staff Writer RALEIGH -- Jacksonville Barracudas guard and former world boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. opted to travel with his team to Raleigh to meet the Cougars in the quarterfinals of the USBL playoffs instead of providing commentary of Saturday night's heavyweight rematch between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas. On second thought, perhaps he'd have rather gone to Las Vegas. Led by Donnie Seale, the Cougars beat the Barracudas 128-124 Saturday in front of a crowd of 911 in Dorton Arena to advance to Tuesday's semifinals in Atlantic City, N.J.Seale made 14 of 15 field-goal attempts and scored 39 points to help the Cougars compensate for the absence of Chuck Kornegay, who flew to Miami on Friday for a tryout with the NBA's Heat. "I knew that with Kornegay gone, somebody was going to have to step it up, so I took it upon myself to do so," the former N.C. State guard said. Forward Nate Higgs also made a major contribution with 30 points. Jones was 3-for-12 from the field and had only eight points. Curt Smith and Artemus M&&1&&learey led Jacksonville with 32 points apiece. "I didn't know what to expect from the guys tonight," Cougars coach Rick Ross said. "With Kornegay being called to the Heat, I just prayed to God and asked the guys to step it up, and as always, they both pulled through." "We are very pleased with the outcome this year; finishing second in the division and winning our first playoff game is great considering that we are new team in the league," Cougars assistant general manager Alonzo Willis said. "We have gotten a good response from the community." The Cougars' average home attendance during the regular season was a league-high 1,204. "This win is a tremendous boost for the community, our club and especially the players because once we get to Atlantic City you will have NBA scouts there, and our sole objective is to move these players on the NBA, CBA or overseas and to give them a chance to showcase their talents," Willis said. Higgs has had a tryout with the Philadelphia 76ers, and guard Tyrone Hopkins, who started the season with Raleigh, is now playing professionally in the Phillippines. | ||||||||||||||||||||
